What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal in the cervical and lumbar regions of the spine, which can lead to compression of the spinal cord and nerves which can cause muscle weakness, numbness and pain in the back, buttocks, and legs.

Spinal Stenosis and Social Security Disability

The Social Security Administration (SSA) discusses disorders of the spine, including spinal stenosis, under Section 1.04 of the Blue Book. In order to qualify for Social Security Disability solely on spinal stenosis you must meet or medically equal listing 1.04 and your medical records must show the following:
  • The stenosis must be in your lumbar region.
  • You must have a positive imaging test (MRI, myelography, and/or CT scan) showing evidence of lumbar spinal stenosis.
  • You must have pseudoclaudication (pain in your lower back, buttocks, and thighs, with weakness in your lower extremities).
  • You must experience chronic nonradicular pain (pain which is not radiating from a nerve).
  • You must not be able to walk effectively.
Fortunately, the SSA looks at the entirety of your medical record and if you do not meet all of the requirements for spinal stenosis it is still possible to qualify for Social Security Disability.

Have you become disabled because of spinal stenosis or experiencing chronic back pain? We can help you obtain Social Security disability (SSD) benefits due to your injuries. We will consider your entire medical history when assessing your case. For example, people who suffer from spinal problems may develop depression because of the pain and changes to quality of life.
