Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating form of chronic pain. Symptoms can be treated, but there is no cure for the condition, which causes intense pain in the arms, legs, and sometimes other body parts.

The Two Sides of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

There are two types of complex regional pain syndrome:

  • Type 1 is often called reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). It is triggered by an illness or injury, but not one that directly affected the painful body part.

  • Type 2 is caused by a direct injury to the nerves of the affected body part. Type 2 complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) was formerly known as causalgia.

A direct blow, a firearm injury, surgery, bone fractures, infections and muscle strains and sprains can all precipitate the onset of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).

Don't Give Up on Treatment

People with either form of complex regional pain syndrome can feel hopeless and give up on treatment. We advise clients to pursue regular medical treatment for the disabling condition, even if there is no hope of effecting a cure. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will decide your case based on your medical record, not on how much pain you say you are experiencing.
